When to Start Spring Cleanup in Wisconsin

Start too early and you damage the lawn. Too late and you're fighting weeds all summer. Here's the window that actually works in southeast Wisconsin.

The short answer

In the Racine, Kenosha, and Milwaukee area, the sweet spot for spring cleanup is usually early-to-mid April — once the ground has thawed and dried out enough to walk on without leaving footprints. If you step on the lawn and it squishes or your shoe sinks, it's too early.

Why timing matters more than people think

Raking and cleaning a lawn while the ground is still saturated compacts the soil and tears up crowns of grass that are just waking up. You end up with thin, damaged turf in exactly the spots you were trying to clean. Waiting an extra week or two costs you nothing and protects the lawn.

But don't wait too long either

Leaves and matted debris left over winter block sunlight and trap moisture, which is how you get snow mold and bare patches. They also give weeds a head start. Once the lawn dries out, the clock is ticking — the longer that debris sits, the more it sets you back.

What a proper spring cleanup includes

A real cleanup isn't just raking leaves. It's clearing leaves and winter debris, cutting back perennials and ornamental grasses, edging and re-defining beds, removing dead growth from shrubs, and hauling it all away. That's the reset that makes everything you do the rest of the year look better.

The one thing most people skip

Bed edges. Winter heaves and blurs the line between bed and lawn, and a crisp re-cut edge is the single biggest visual difference on most properties — more than the mulch that goes on top of it. If you only do one thing, re-cut your edges.

Rule of thumb

Ground firm enough to walk on without sinking, daytime temps consistently in the 50s, and before the weeds green up. In our area that's usually the first half of April, give or take a couple weeks depending on the year.
